Safe Sports 1st Team School Award for 2015-2021

Athletic Training

Parker is recognized as a leader in protecting student-athletes from injury. Since 2015, we have received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports 1st Team School award.

Keeping student-athletes safe during physical education classes, team practices, and competition is a priority. Parker is one of the few schools in the county with a full-time certified athletic trainer on staff.

Athletic trainers specialize in preventing, assessing, treating, and rehabilitating musculoskeletal injuries. They are also involved in the rehabilitation and reconditioning of injured athletes. They educate student-athletes about how to avoid risks of injury.

The American Medical Association recognizes athletic trainers as healthcare professionals who help physicians to evaluate and treat athletes and help athletes to maintain peak physical fitness, and prevent and treat injuries.

While school is in session, students may consult the athletic trainer for urgent care, evaluations, treatment, rehabilitation, and referrals.

Mandatory Athletic Forms for 2023-2024 Student-Athletes

Parker closely follows the ever-changing guidelines and expectations from the State of California and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the state’s governing body for high school sports.

Magnus Health Athletic Information
All athletic health forms, including the pre-participation physical form, are now available on Magnus Health. Parker Athletics uses Magnus to safely and securely store all health records.

Magnus will also be used to document and report incidents, injuries, and illnesses to parents, who will receive an email notification when there is new communication regarding your student-athlete(s).

Find instructions on how to log in and access the health forms on Magnus in this document.

Pre-Participation Sports Physicals on Magnus
Only Upper School athletes are required to complete the Athletics health forms.
*Middle School students enrolling in a sport should not select this in the Conditional Questions upon login to Magnus. (It can be changed at any time if you already have).

The physical must be completed on the Parker form. If you use your doctor’s form, you will also need to complete our form and submit both due to having permission to treat on our form.
  • To download the form, log into Magnus, and go to the pre-participation physical form section. The form is four pages–please print all pages. Fill out the student profile information, including all sports you are considering, even if you have not made a final decision.
  • Have your doctor fill in the remaining information and sign.
  • A parent/guardian must also sign the form.
  • Upload the completed four-page form to Magnus under the same section.
  • Athletics does not collect any hard copies. Please save it for your records.
  • Returning athletes-–when you are sent a reminder to complete health information in Magnus each spring, you don’t need to do the physical at that time unless you have been directly notified that yours is expired. Physical forms are due one year from the previous submission. We prefer they be completed in the summer so that all of last year’s injuries are cleared, but you will be notified via Magnus when your form expires.
  • New athletes—please wait until summer after your 8th-grade year to submit your physical, so you will be on a summer due date, which is ideal.

    Important Dates
    • Sports Physical Night
      • We are pleased to offer an ON campus sports physical. We recommend that no matter when you had your most recent physical, to please join us. This will help get every athlete back on the summer schedule and clear any previous injuries from the last sports season. The sports physicals will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Date TBD for 2024-2025.
      • Click here to download our Sports Physical form.

    • Sway Baseline Concussion Tests
      • Sway baseline concussion tests will be done for all athletes yearly during the first week of practice.

Student Athletic Training Program

Have you ever seen someone run on the field during a sporting event to attend to an injured player? If you love sports and medicine, then Athletic Training is for you.

This class teaches students about injury management from an athletic training viewpoint. Students will learn skills necessary to assist the athletic trainer after school with emergency care, taping, anatomy, evaluations, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all sports. You can receive PE credit, as the time commitment is sometimes more significant than an individual sport.

We seek motivated, self-driven students eager to learn about the body, injuries, and a new profession. Being a student Athletic Trainer will help build new medical skills but also help with communication, time management, and interpersonal skills that can carry you through life.

If interested, please get in touch with Parker’s Athletic Trainer, Niki Dehner, at ndehner@francisparker.org.
